About the Artist

I moved from North Texas to Benicia, California, in 1982 to work with Judy Chicago on The Birth Project. During a four-year period, I was part of a small core staff of volunteers that helped facilitate Judy in the execution of her vision for this project of celebrating the powerful imagery of birth and women’s role in creation. I was in charge of developing and printing black-and-white photographs for exhibition panels and the book.

In 1987, I began attending Mills College as an older, resuming student to complete my BFA. Catherine Wagner was my inspiration for applying to Mills. I graduated from Mills College in 1989 with a BFA and completed my MFA in photography in 1993. During this time, I was Catherine Wagner’s studio assistant and worked on her project Home and Other Stories. I went on to work on several other projects.

I was employed by the Oakland Museum of California as an exhibit technician and later as a Senior Preparator for the Conservation Department
